About Dr. Albert Ellis, Ph.D.:

Dr. Albert Ellis, Ph.D. is the founder of RET - Rational Emotive Therapy (Now known as REBT or Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy).
He was born in Pittsburgh and raised in New York City, holds a bachelor's degree from the City College of New York, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Columbia University. He has been Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Rutgers University, United States International University, and at Pittsburg State University, Kansas.
He served as Chief Psychologist of the New Jersey State Diagnostic Center and Chief Psychologist of the New Jersey Department of Institutions and Agencies. He has been a Consultant in Clinical Psychology to the New York City Board of Education and to the Veterans Administration. He was the founder of the orgranization now known as The Albert Ellis Institute for Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. He has practiced psychotherapy, marriage and family counseling, as well as sex therapy for over sixty years.
A fellow of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Ellis has served as President of its Division of Consulting Psychology and as a member of its Council of Representatives. He is past President of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex, and as been a Fellow of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, the American Orthopsychiatric Association, the American Sociological Association, the American Association of Applied Anthropology, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists has qualified him as a Certified Sex Therapist. He is a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology of the American Board of Professional Psychology, a Diplomate in Clinical Hypnosis of the American Board of Psychological Hypnosis, a Diplomate of the American Board of Medical Psychotherapists, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Sexology.
Dr. Ellis has been President of the Advisory Council of Distinguished Humanists and has also served as Vice-President of the American Academy of Psychotherapists, as Chairman of the Marriage Counseling Section of the National Council of Family Relations, and as an Executive Committee Member of the Divisions of Psychotherapy and of Humanistic Psychology of the American Psychological Association, and
of the New York Society of Clinical Psychologists.
Several professional societies have honored him: He holds the Humanist of the Year Award of the American Humanist Association, the Distinguished
Psychologist Award of the Academy of Psychologists in Marital and Family Therapy, and the Distinguished Practitioner Award of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists. The American Psychological Association has given him its major award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Knowledge, the American Association for Counseling and Development has given him its major Professional Development Award, and the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy has given him its Outstanding Clinical Contribution Award. He is a member of the National Academy of Practice in Psychology. He was ranked as the "Second Most Influential Psychotherapists" in a survey of American psychologists and counselors and was ranked "Most Influential Psychotherapist" in a survey of Canadian Clinical Psychologists.
Dr. Ellis was awarded the Townsend Harris Medal by the Alumni Association of City College of New York for "his distinguished contributions to his chosen field of work and to the welfare of his fellow men." He received the Joseph Zubin Award of The American Psychopathological Association, and he was awarded the Medal of Sexology of the American Academy of Clinical Sexologists.
Dr. Ellis is widely known as a primary theorist in the field of counseling and has authored, co-authored, or edited
over 700 publications. He was a widely sought after speaker who conducted numerous trainings and was paramount to the
professional development of thousands of counselors in the US and abroad.
