The most important question we get from LPC, LMHC, LCPC and other professional counselors about our counseling CEU continuing education courses is, "Will it count toward my licensure CEU requirements?" We understand the importance of that question and have spent a lot of time researching the counseling licensure requirements of various state counseling boards in an effort to determine applicability of our professional development courses toward licensing requirements.
Below is a summary of our findings and whether, in our opinion, the CEU courses offered here are likely to be approved CEU's. Please note that it is the responsibility of the licensee to ensure that the activity meets the state board requirements in effect at the time the CEU credit is awarded. We cannot guarantee that the CEU hours will be applicable for any given counseling board, state, or license unless we show a valid provider number for that state or board and you select a course with administrative or clinical content appropriate to your license and area of practice. Some states do not issue CEU provider numbers or pre-approve continuing education providers or CEU programs. Others may require the licensee to seek pre-approval for programs not expressly recognized by that licensure board before undertaking the activity.
Another factor to consider in selecting your continuing education is relevancy. Some boards review CEU course titles for relevancy to the area in which the licensee practices. The questions to consider are, "Will this material contribute to my professional growth and development as a professional counselor and is it likely to be useful to me with regard to my mental health practice areas?" Taking an online continuing education course unrelated to your area of practice is not likely to help you with professional development and may be rejected by your state mental health board of examiners.
Although every effort is made to keep this information current, CEU rules change frequently without notice and you are encouraged to check with your licensing agency if you have any questions about the applicability of these hours before taking any continuing education coursework. Since the counseling licensure board will determine appropriateness of the CEU hours, it is the only entity that can provide you with a definitive answer of whether the continuing education courses will be approved by the board. For some states/boards use of our courses as independent or home study CEU courses may require additional documentation or work on behalf of the licensee, such as completion of an affidavit or summary paper.
