What is a CEU Contact Hour?

Question:   What does the term CEU Contact Hour(s) mean?

Answer:

The term "CEU" is defined in an almost infinite number of ways referring to something different to each board or certification organization. To some boards 1 CEU is defined as 10 hours of contact in a continuing education activity, to others it means one hour of contact time in a continuing education activity. There are still others that consider every three contact hours to be a CEU.

To avoid confusion we use the term "Clock Hours" to refer to the units of credit for our continuing education. A one hour CEU clock hour course is equivalent to the credit you would receive for sitting in a conference or workshop from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm. A three contact hour course will be granted the same credit as attending a conference or workshop from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm.

The actual amount of time it takes you to complete the course may vary depending on your reading speed and/or familiarity with the topic covered in the material prior to completing the course, but the credit awarded is based on a model established by the NBCC for written continuing education courses. Audio and video courses are based on actual presentation time of the materials.
