We are proud to provide a listing and brief information about some titles related to the DSM-IV-TR. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual is published by the American Psychiatric Association and is periodically revised. The current versions, the DMS-IV-TR was published in June of 2000. Previous editions of the DSM included the DSM-IV, the DSM-III-R, DSM-II, and the original Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of mental health disorders. The DSM is used as the standard for defining mental health disorders. It established criteria required for an individual to be diagnosed with any given mental health disorder. The DSM also provides a wealth of information about all psychiatric disorders that may include prevalence, identification of risk populations, gender breakdowns, importance of family history, and other information.

The DSM-IV-TR is a valuable tool used to facilitate communication between mental health professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, counselors and case managers. It also allows for a standardized classification system for purposes of identifying disorders based on the symptoms and obtaining reimbursement for services. The DSM system is complex in many ways and still highly subjective in some cases. A number of mental health experts examining the same patient or client may come up with different diagnostic impressions, in which case professional judgment must prevail. Learning to accurately assess for and apply the criteria can be tricky. That's why there have been a number of companion publications that seek to ease the learning process related to diagnosing mental health disorders and help both the novice and seasoned mental health practitioner ensure that he/she is diagnosing to the best of his/her abilities and has the best possible understanding of the DSM-IV-TR and it's uses.
