The history and development of psychology is an interesting study. From the beginnings with Sigmund Freud and his predecessors, it has been one of the fastest growing and evolving fields of scientific studies in history. We have moved quickly through the dominance of a variety of psychological ideologies and schools of thought, all informing practice briefly or longer. Major schools of thought in psychology include Freudian, behaviorism, cognitive-behavioral, social psychology, and others. Today, many psychological enthusiasts subscribe to a more eclectic approach to thinking about human functioning in the psychological realm. That is, we have had major contributions from a variety of major theorists and perspectives on the mind and spirit. All of these schools of thought have made major contributions to contemporary ideology and practice of psychology. The titles included here but scratch the surface of what is truly an amazingly broad field of study that, for many, is a lifelong endeavor. Enjoy the journey.
