The course objectives are outlined below. These are provided so that you as the learner will be familiar with what to expect from this course. It outlines what will be able to do when you have completed the material and how the material is to be delivered. Target Audience:
This course is designed for healthcare providers. Specifically, it is designed for Licensed Professional Counselors, Social Workers, Psychologists, Chemical Dependency Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Nurses, or any other healthcare provider that is likely to gain professionally from increased knowledge in the subject area. It is appropriate for any provider that is likely to come into contact with those dealing with issues related to the clinical topic in the course of practice.


Teaching Method:
This course is being delivered via a web-based format in which you will be asked to read material relevant to the topic and answer questions about the material you have read. You will also have the opportunity to complete a course evaluation at the conclusion of the course to help the instructors know how well we are meeting the learning objectives and how well you like the format of delivery for the material. Other feedback related to the topic or course, including questions or concerns, is always welcome and may be submitted by E-Mail


Learning Objectives:
The objective of this course is to familiarize the learner with research on the nature, identification, and treatment strategies regarding the disorders collectively referred to as the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) or Pervasive Developmental Disorders. The course is intended to assist clinicians and others with enhancing knowledge of the subject. Since mental healthcare practitioners are more likely than average to encounter someone with Autism or a family with a child with autistic-like presentations, the ability to identify the problem and generate some initial treatment and/or diagnostic strategies is important.

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify the prominent features of ASD.

2. Differentiate the clinical disorders that comprise ASD.

3. Explain possible treatment approaches for clients with ASD.

4. Identify research areas that may be promising in understanding ASD.

5. Demonstrate an enhanced understanding of potential ASD etiology and some initial treatment strategies.

6. Correctly answer at least 75% of multiple choice questions on a quiz over the material.
