Disaster Mental Health Intervention Course Objectives - 2 Contact Hours

The course objectives are outlined below. These are provided so that you as the learner will be familiar with what to expect from this course. Target Audience:
This course is designed for healthcare providers. Specifically, it is designed for Licensed Professional Counselors, Social Workers, Psychologists, Chemical Dependency Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Nurses, or any other healthcare provider that is likely to gain professionally from increased knowledge in the subject area. It is appropriate for any provider that is likely to come into contact with those recovering from a major disaster.


Teaching Method:
This course is being delivered via a web-based format in which you will be asked to read material relevant to the topic and answer questions about the material you have read. You will also have the opportunity to complete a course evaluation at the conclusion of the course to help the instructors know how well we are meeting the learning objectives and how well you like the format of delivery for the material. Other feedback related to the topic or course, including questions or concerns, is always welcome and may be submitted by E-Mail


Learning Objectives:
The objective of this course is to familiarize the learner with appropriate mental health intervention strategies. It offers a basic understanding of how mental health workers can assist in disaster relief, outlines some basic intervention strategies and offers some suggestions of things not to do in the intervention process. The course is appropriate for mental health and other healthcare providers as they are likely to be first line responders in major crisis situations.

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify some normal disaster reactions in survivors.

2. Understand and identify some basic intervention strategies.

3. Identify some inappropriate intervention strategies sometimes utilized in disaster recovery.

4. Demonstrate an enhanced understanding of stress management in disaster recovery workers.

5. Correctly answer 75% of multiple choice questions on a quiz over the material.
