The course objectives are outlined below. These are provided so that you as the learner will be familiar with what to expect from this course. Target Audience:
This course is designed for healthcare providers. Specifically, it is designed for Licensed Professional Counselors, Social Workers, Psychologists, Chemical Dependency Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Nurses, or any other healthcare provider that is likely to gain professionally from increased knowledge in the subject area. It is appropriate for any provider that is likely to come into contact with those dealing with issues related to the clinical topic in the course of practice.


Teaching Method:
This course is being delivered via a web-based format in which you will be asked to read material relevant to the topic and answer questions about the material you have read. You will also have the opportunity to complete a course evaluation at the conclusion of the course to help the instructors know how well we are meeting the learning objectives and how well you like the format of delivery for the material. Other feedback related to the topic or course, including questions or concerns, is always welcome and may be submitted by E-Mail


Learning Objectives:
The objective of this course is to familiarize the learner with research on the specific issues unique to the Latino American populations with an emphasis on Mexican American clients. Materials cover statistical information regarding mental health related issues. Some information regarding cultural trends in utilization and strengths and risk factors within the population will also be addressed.

Skill Development:

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify some basic statistical trends related to mental health in the populations under study.

2. Differentiate the culture-bound syndromes.

3. Explain possible supportive and risk factors frequently observed with Latino clients.

4. Identify research focuses that may be promising in better understanding these populations.

5. Demonstrate an enhanced understanding of potential etiology and presentation of mental health issues in these groups.

6. Correctly answer at least 75% of multiple choice questions on a quiz over the material.
