Target Audience:
This course is designed for healthcare providers. Specifically, it is designed for Licensed Professional Counselors, Social Workers, Psychologists, Chemical Dependency Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Nurses, or any other healthcare provider that is likely to gain professionally from increased knowledge in the subject area. It is appropriate for any provider that is likely to come into contact with those dealing with issues related to drug dependence, with an emphasis on opiates.


Teaching Method:
This course is being delivered via a web-based format in which you will be asked to view material relevant to the topic and answer questions about the material you have viewed. You will also have the opportunity to complete a course evaluation at the conclusion of the course to help the instructors know how well we are meeting the learning objectives and how well you like the format of delivery for the material. Learning Objectives:
The objective of this course is to familiarize the learner with current pharmacological approaches to managing drug addiction with an emphasis on opiate addiction. The emphasis is only policy and the process of policy development in this area with some dialog related to treatment implications for the front line practitioner within both the medical and psychosocial realms.

Skill Development:

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify some basic policies and guidelines related to drug assisted addiction therapies.

2. Differentiate the two major patient subgroups outlined in the presentation.

3. Explain possible primary and complimentary treatment approaches to manage drug addiction.

4. Identify barriers that may inhibit access to treatment for addicted persons, especially with regard to pharmacological intervention.

5. Demonstrate an enhanced understanding of the importance of a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to management.

6. Correctly answer at least 75% of multiple choice questions on a quiz over the material.
