Mutual Support Groups in the Recovery Process - 1 Contact Hour

Target Audience:
This course is designed for healthcare providers. Specifically, it is designed for Licensed Professional Counselors, Social Workers, Psychologists, Chemical Dependency Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Nurses, or any other healthcare provider that is likely to gain professionally from increased knowledge in the subject area. It is appropriate for any provider that is likely to come into contact with those dealing with issues related to alcoholism or drug dependence, or family members struggling with addiction.


Teaching Method:
This course is being delivered via a web-based format in which you will be asked to read material relevant to the topic and answer questions about the material you have read. You will also have the opportunity to complete a course evaluation at the conclusion of the course to help the instructors know how well we are meeting the learning objectives and how well you like the format of delivery for the material. Other feedback related to the topic or course, including questions or concerns, is always welcome and may be submitted by E-Mail


Learning Objectives:
The objective of this course is to help the helping professional fully understand the roles and limitations of peer based mutual support groups in the recover process. It is also intended to educate providers regarding appropriate knowledge of resources for referrals of both people struggling with addiction and/or family members of those struggling with addiction. A better understanding of the purpose and process of the models will assist treatment providers in having a more meaningful dialog with patients or clients who may benefit from a discussion about what to expect from attendance at a meeting.

Skill Development:

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify some of the mutual support group options and who would be appropriate referrals for each.

2. Describe the average experience of a fist time attendee.

3. Explain possible barriers to seeking out treatment and support for addiction.

4. Identify at least one group without a spiritual 12-step basis appropriate for referral of secular clients.

5. Demonstrate an enhanced understanding of the potential benefits of the mutual support model in recovery.

6. Correctly answer at least 75% of multiple choice questions on a quiz over the material.
