Target Audience:
This course is designed for healthcare providers. Specifically, it is designed for Licensed Professional Counselors, Social Workers, Psychologists, Chemical Dependency Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Nurses, or any other healthcare provider that is likely to gain professionally from increased knowledge in the subject area. It is appropriate for any provider that is likely to come into contact with those dealing with issues related to the clinical topic in the course of practice.

Teaching Method:
This course is being delivered via a web-based format in which you will be asked to read material relevant to the topic and answer questions about the material you have read. You will also have the opportunity to complete a course evaluation at the conclusion of the course to help the instructors know how well we are meeting the learning objectives and how well you like the format of delivery for the material. Learning Objectives:
The objective of this course is to familiarize the learner with research on the nature, identification, and treatment strategies regarding Tobacco (nicotine) use and dependence. The course is intended to assist clinicians and others with enhancing knowledge of the subject. It is appropriate for mental health clinicians and healthcare clinicians to be familiar with the basic concepts related to tobacco use and abstinence since they are at greater than average risk of solicitation for assistance in terminating use and/or in a position to suggest termination for patients.

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Explain approaches to tobacco cessation counseling.

2. Identify some assistive devices used in nicotine cessation.

3. Identify specific types of intervention (formal and informal).

4. Define specific terms relevant to nicotine addiction.

5. Correctly answer 75% of multiple choice questions on a quiz over the material.
